Magnificat

With Wayfarers Australia; Luminescence Chamber Singers, Canberra

Wayfarers Australia (aged 9 – 76) from Sydney, Bowral, Canberra and Melbourne, directed by Judith Clingan AM, with Luminescence Chamber Singers, Canberra, will sing nine settings of the Magnificat from mediaeval (Dufay), Renaissance (Palestrina), baroque (Schütz’ setting for double choir), romantic (Mendelssohn) and 20th – 21st centuries (Distler, Taizé, Clingan, Pärt, Terpstra), as well as the mediaeval O Virgo Splendens (solo voice, violin, recorder) and Rachmaninoff’s Bogoroditsye Dievo (Ave Maria, from his Vespers). The concert will open with the women and girls processing as they sing Clingan’s plainchant-style setting of the Magnificat underlaid with handbells ostinato; it will conclude with the audience joining the choirs in the Taizé Magnificat.
